Interesting article from Der Spiegel on the dangers of wind power.  The article claims that as the use of wind power continues to grow, the number of accidents have also grown as well as the number of mishaps and maintenence problems.

A wind tower toppling over in the middle of a field doesn't quite seem to pose the danger that global warming does, but I do see their point.   I see the advantages of wind power vastly outnumbering the problems and I imagine as the technology improves we'll see some of these difficulties overcome.

Tesla Motors Announces New CEO
Tesla Motors Roadster Tesla Motors has recently announced that founder Martin Eberhard will be replaced as CEO of the company by  Michael Marks.  Marks is the former CEO of Flextronics International Ltd. and is an early investor in Tesla.

Eberhard mentions on his blog that this move had been in the planning stages for many months so the change should not signal any weakness in the company or doubt about their upcoming distribution of the Tesla Roadster, slated to hit the roads later in 2007.

Elon Musk, Chairman of Tesla, mentions that Marks is only to serve as an interim CEO for the company as the company searches for a permanent leader.

Eberhard is set to remain with the company as President of Technology.  As Eberhard mentions on his blog, "This means that I will spend less time with Tesla Store plans, performance reviews, purchase order approvals, board meeting minutes, and the like - and more time with engineering and manufacturing to get Tesla Roadsters on the road, and also more time with you, our customers. Honestly, this sounds like a lot more fun to me."

 
Automotive X PRIZE Seeks 100 mpg Car
Image Automotive X PRIZE (AXP) announced that it was funding a competition with a prize greater than $10 million for a car that is capable of obtaining 100 miles per gallon in real-world driving and conditions.

"We invite the world's best and brightest minds to look at this independent, high-profile competition as a way to make a difference for generations to come," said Mark Goodstein, executive director, Automotive X PRIZE. "In the spirit of grand competitions throughout history - including Lindbergh's historic flight across the Atlantic 80 years ago - we expect that the Automotive X PRIZE will bring about change and innovation for the benefit of everybody. This competition will help level the playing field and capture entrepreneurial, scientific and technical energy to bring about viable cars that consumers want to buy."

Tesla Motors Announces New Assembly Plant
Image Tesla Motors has recently announced they will build their new assembly plant in Albuquerque, NM for production of their upcoming electric car.  The plant will be constucted beginning in April 2007 and will ultimately create about 400 new, high wage jobs in the region.

Tesla Motors, based out of San Carlos, Calif., will use the plant to produce its “WhiteStar” car, a four door, five-passenger sports sedan, which is 100 percent electric. The New Mexico plant will be the company’s first assembly facility in the United States. The plant will be built on the West Side of Albuquerque, at Cordera Mesa adjacent to the new Tempur-Pedic plant. The 400 new jobs will pay between $24,000 and $100,000 a year, plus excellent benefits and stock options.

BP Solar to Spend $70M on Expansion

Frederick, MD, November 16, 2006: BP Solar today unveiled its plans for $70 million expansion project at its North American headquarters in Frederick, MD. The expansion will result in nearly doubling the facility's current casting and sizing capacity to approximately 150 MW. The company projects that 70 new jobs will be created. Other plans include an upgrade of the interior of the facility by employing sustainable design components.

Google Going Solar
Googleplex Going Solar Google has recently announced plans to convert a portion of their energy needs to solar power.  The company plans to install over 9,200 solar panels around the 1 million-square-foot campus known as the Googleplex.

Experts believe the project should pay for itself within 5 to 10 years though Google is thus far hush on the projected costs of the solar project.

California company El Solutions has been to design and lead the project.  The company claims that this solar job will be the largest corporate solar installation in the United States.  The company claims that energy saving will likely exceed $393,000 a year.

The Google Blog makes the comment that "if the business community continues to increase investments and focus on energy efficient and renewable power generation technologies, we have a good feeling that our future will be bright."  More from the Google Blog.

Applied Material to Enter Solar Market
Solar Energy Applied Materials, Inc.,  a worldwide leader in equipment and services for manufacturing semiconductors and flat panel displays, today launched its strategy to enter the rapidly growing solar photovoltaic (PV) equipment market as announced in a recent press release from the company.
